Introduction:-
The Rajpalayam dog also known as the Poligar Hound, or Indian Sighthound dog.
Basically, these Rajapalayam dog has been bred in the Nayak dynasty of Tamil Nadu and was used to guard the royal families in the past.
These dogs were traditionally used as guard dogs, Hunting dogs, War dogs, and most commonly as a Companion Dog. As guard dogs, they were known to protect rice fields, houses, and farms in India.
Appearance:-
Rajapalayam is a large dog, usually measuring about Height: 25-30 inches (65-75 cm). A muscular and long sharp body giving a very sense of balance and a tail with a slight curl gives benefits.
Rajapalayam should be kept in an optimum working condition because they have a single coat of skin and a very hardworking and a good looking dog. Sharp and edgy face with a pink nose and glowing eyes.
The most selling and priced color is milky white with a pink nose and golden eyes and a single, short and fine coat of skin. But with many fully grown white dogs are reported to be deaf at a very high rate in this breed.
Temperament:-
Rajapalayam dog is very courageous, always ready to do anything, or fight with anyone to save their owner and their territory. In some old cases, many people from the same locality said once 4 of these dogs did a fight with a lion just to save their owner’s life.
These dogs are one-person dogs not everyone can be familiar with them but yes they are very caring for their family if the owner has trained them to be with his family in a very young age.
They have very strong hunting instincts; they should not be trusted with small pets such as small cats or small rodents until they have been familiar with them since their childhood. It is very important to socialize them as a puppy.
Rajapalayam has also been known as a dog which is extremely attached to their owner and can do anything to remove the entire obstacle from their way.
This breed has abundant energy so they need a heavy exercise routine on a regular basis to ensure agility and give their mind its required stimulation.
History:-
Rajapalayam hound was primarily bred and used by the Chola dynasty of Tamil Nadu. Originally bred to hunt wild Boar and used as guard dogs and also to participate in wars in India.
Because of their already aggressive image and reputation, they were picked by the army and used In war as war dogs, they were known to fight in Polygar and Carnatic wars against the British from around 1799-1805.
They are largely used as guarding the farms and rice fields in India. In the last two decades, the Indian Army is using these dogs to support the army in Kashmir border.
The Rajapalayam dogs got their name from southern India as they were derived there specifically in Rajapalayam.
They were fast, aggressive, and dedicated to their task which made them a great fit for the War. This breed still lives today in small and rural villages in Tamil Nadu. Today not everyone knows about them that’s why they are going to the way of extinction there are so many breeders and local government authorities are trying to save this Royal Rajapalayam Breed from Extinction.
Life Expectancy:-
Normally expectancy for the age of this Dog breed is somewhere between 9-12 years, but according to some owners this dog lives an average age of 20 years of age which is totally abnormal in dogs, and in many cases this has been confirmed that some of these Rajapalayam dogs have 26 years as a maximum age.
Interesting fact:
In 2005 on January 9th the Indian postal department has brought out Postage Stamps on the Rajapalayam dog with a special photograph of this dog on it and the face value of Rupee 15.
