When to switch Puppy to Adult Dog
Food? This is an easy question to ask but the decision is a little complicated
to know Because there are many factors to judge so here you are going to read
about all those factors.
Difference between Puppy Food and Adult Dog Food?
Puppies require much more Nutrients than Adults that’s why
puppy food contains much more proteins, calcium, fats, and many more other enzymes
which is needed for a puppy’s healthy growth.
These nutrition, calcium and other enzymes help your Puppy
to make his muscle strong, bones strong, and his skin coat to make shinier that
ensures your puppy is growing healthy.
As the puppy grows older, however, his needs become lesser than
before and energy level decreases it means your dog no longer needs a Puppy
Formula Food.
Adult dog formulas contain lesser and different types of nutrients
as their needs become different as compare to Puppies. That’s why it is important
to recognize that is your puppy is ready for the Adult Food or not.
When to switch towards adult dog food?
Basically, there is no particular time to change your dog
food but there are some ways to recognize that now this is the time to shift
your dog’s food from Puppy to adult.
Generally, you can change your dog food if they reached 80%
of their adult size, or when their natural growth begins to slower but mainly
this decision depends on his type of Breed and his body size.
Breed size matters
·
Toy Breeds with almost 30 pounds of weight can
reach an adult level at the age of 9 to 12 months
·
Medium Breed dogs with up to 80 pounds of weight
can reach an adult level at the age of 12 to 16 months.
·
Large Breed dogs with over 80 pounds of weight
can reach their adult level at the age of almost 2 years.
*These are the basic
Factors to know when to switch Puppy to
Adult dog food.
Still, you can ask your vet to know when you can shift your
dog’s Food because the vet can tell you the exact time according to your dog’s
specific needs.
How to switch my dog’s Food?
So now if your dog is ready for the Adult dog Food according
to you and your Vet, it is important to give food to your dog slowly.
Switching your dog’s food quickly can make your dog sick
because of some digestive difficulties such as vomiting and diarrhea because
your dog is not used to it. It can make your dog reject the new food
completely.
Now you have to make your dog comfortable with the help of
this way:-
·
Start feeding your dog with 75% of Puppy Food
and 25% of adult food 2 – 3 days to make him comfortable.
·
Then try to make this Ratio 50 – 50 to check if
the dog is comfortable with food or not.
·
Now if your dog is happy with new adult dog food
and eating without any hesitation then you can Shift properly from puppy to
adult dog food.
So now your dog turned into an Adult from Puppy.
Every dog takes different times to switch their Diet, but
usually according to the vets this process has to be done before 15 days.
The no. of Meals in a single day you are giving to your
Puppy also needs change usually adult dogs to need meals only two times in a day
but still, ask your vet to know exactly how many does your dog requires in a
single day.
Now you all know when to switch puppy to adult dog food,
but there is one more thing which also needs change and that thing is Treats
